Proposed Florida Legislation Would Ban Private Insurance Coverage for Abortion

UPDATE: 4/20/2010 *** This proposed amendment was withdrawn this afternoon after substantial public opposition. Thanks for all your support! ****

Today an amendment was introduced to House Bill 885 that would ultimately prohibit ALL insurance plans sold in Florida from providing coverage for abortions, except when necessary to save a woman's life.

This affects all insurance coverage, whether it is offered through an exchange established by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, or even coverage that individuals or employers already have.

This bill is about legislators with their own political agendas trying to make medical and moral decisions for all of us. It's no different than the Terri Schiavo case or President Bush's veto on stem cell research.

A vote on this amendment could take place as early as tomorrow morning, so we must act now to prevent our state government from invading the privacy of Floridians by putting reproductive health decisions in the hands of politicians.

Please call your Representative today and urge them to oppose the abortion ban amendment to HB 885.

Visit the Florida House of Representatives website to find your representative's phone number and call them today. Here what you can tell them:
    My name is __________, and I live in ___________. I am calling to urge Representative ____________ to vote no on the dangerous amendment to HB 885, which would restrict health care coverage for abortions in Florida.

  • This amendment is an unnecessary government interference in a woman's most private and personal health care decisions;

  • This amendment completely undermines a woman's ability to get comprehensive health care coverage. In these difficult economic times, legislators should be finding ways to increase access health care, not cutting coverage that women in this state already have;

  • This bill singles out abortion - a basic part of women's health care - from all other health care services. We may not all feel the same way about abortion, but what's most important is that a woman facing an unintended pregnancy should have the opportunity to make the best decision for herself and her family.

  • Please protect a woman's ability to make private health care decisions without unnecessary government interference and vote no on this dangerous amendment to HB 885, which puts politics before a woman's health.
Call your representatives today and demand that they vote against this amendment!

Spread the word..
